The Poet Who Fell in Love with Life Insurance
If you had told me a year ago that I’d be here, writing about how much I love life insurance, I probably would have laughed.
Not a polite chuckle. I mean full, snort-laugh, clutch-my-stomach disbelief.
Because if I’m honest, I thought life insurance was dull, dry, and stuffy. It conjured up images of briefcases, gray suits, and grumpy old men talking about policies and premiums. A world of spreadsheets and fine print.
I didn’t see myself in it at all.
I’m a poet. A dreamer. A storyteller. I chase inspiration, live for connection, and find beauty in the small moments. How in the world did I end up falling in love with something I once thought was purely transactional?
Well. That’s a story.
The Moment Everything Shifted
The first time I met my mentor in this business, she shattered every stereotype I had.
She was young, vibrant, full of energy and purpose. She talked about clients with so much care—about helping families, protecting legacies, and making a real impact.
And then she said something that completely flipped my perspective:
👉 “This is a personal development and leadership development company. We just happen to sell insurance.”
I didn’t understand it at first. But I do now. Because in the past year, I’ve witnessed transformation—not just in my own life, but in the lives of the people around me.
This business stretches you. It forces you to grow in ways you never expected. It’s not about selling policies—it’s about becoming the kind of person who can lead, serve, and guide others.
From “I Have No Idea What I’m Doing” to Finding My Groove
Becoming an agent isn’t easy.
The state exam alone is challenging. I studied for weeks, drowning in legal jargon and state regulations, convinced I was never going to pass.
But here’s what’s different about this industry: you’re never alone.
Before I even got licensed, I was welcomed into a chat filled with others who were in the same boat. There was this unbelievable culture of support. Leaders cheered us on. They shared resources. They pulled us into live calls where we could watch experienced agents role-play real conversations.
And then… I passed. 🎉
And then… I sat with my first client. 😳
That’s when the real learning started. No amount of studying prepares you for the nerves of your first appointment.
I had my mentor on speed dial. I fumbled through applications, got lost on carrier websites, and tripped over my words. I worried I wasn’t “good enough” yet.
But I kept going.
I met with 30 families.
Then 50.
Then 100.
I found my rhythm. I found my posture. I found my belief.
Every policy I wrote, every family I helped—it all cemented the truth of why this work matters.
Why I Love This Work (And Why It’s So Different Than I Expected)
Looking back, it makes sense why I fell in love with this.
Because life insurance isn’t about money. It’s about people.
It’s about:
✅ A husband knowing his wife won’t lose their home if something happens to him.
✅ A young mother making sure her kids will have financial security no matter what.
✅ A retiree turning life insurance into a tax-free strategy to pass down wealth.
✅ The peace of mind that comes from knowing your family will be okay.
And it’s about the way we grow in the process.
I started this journey thinking it was just a job. Now, I see it as a calling.
Because it’s not just about policies. It’s about becoming the kind of person who can help others through some of life’s hardest conversations.
It’s about learning, failing, trying again, and growing stronger every day.
And for someone like me—a poet, a thinker, a seeker of meaning—that’s the most beautiful part of all.
